If you’re having trouble walking or sitting down, there are several options that can help you reduce hip pain and get back to your daily activities without too much difficulty. Here are three tips for reducing hip pain in the comfort of your own home!

 

Use a Pillow Between Your Knees

This simple trick can help reduce hip pain by adjusting the position of your spine and hips. Place a pillow or folded blanket between your knees while lying on your back, or when sitting up in bed. This will gently push your hips forward and help prevent excess arching in the lower back. This not only reduces hip pain, but also helps to keep you from sleeping on an incline which can lead to snoring and sleep apnea.

 

Sleep on Your Side

Sleeping on your side is one of the simplest ways to reduce hip pain. When you're on your side, your weight is distributed evenly across both hips and won't rest too heavily on one side. But make sure to sleep on a pillow that provides proper support for your head and neck- otherwise you might wake up with neck or back pain.

If you're in bed already, it can be helpful to roll onto your non-dominant side before falling asleep. This way, when you wake up in the morning, it will be much easier for you to get out of bed without grabbing onto anything or using the muscles from your dominant side.

 

Avoid Sleeping on Your Stomach

One of the best ways to reduce hip pain is to avoid sleeping on your stomach. Sleeping on your stomach can put a lot of pressure on your hips, which can make them very uncomfortable. Try sleeping on your side instead or put a pillow underneath your chest for additional support and comfort.

If you can't sleep on your back, try propping up one leg onto a stool or pile of pillows to take some of the pressure off while you sleep. It may also be helpful to place one leg straight out in front of you while lying down- this will help stretch the muscles in that area while resting at night. This will also allow you to change positions if needed throughout the night without much fuss.
